Four Foods On Friday 54

In honour of the election, this week’s Four Foods meme questions were politically colour coded. The final question was to have been responded to with a recipe that represented our vote. As a Canadian, I didn’t vote this week so I picked a recipe to match my Green Card.

1. Name a food you like that uses a red sauce or anything red in it.
I know that most people will say pasta so I want to be different. My red food for the week is homemade strawberry jam. YUM! It’s great on toast, homemade scones, or mixed into yoghurt.

2. Name a food you like with whipped cream in it or on it.
With Christmas coming I’ll have to say triffle. You have to whip the cream as close to serving as possible but the result is yummy goodness!

3. Name a food you like with blueberry in it.
I never had Blueberry Grunt until I moved to Nova Scotia and now miss it. We used to make a poor man's version of this in our dorm rooms with scones and blueberry jam. I have non-drunk memories of university. Who knew?!

4. Share a recipe for pasta or dessert or a beverage.
I love adding pesto to pasta because it tastes incredibly fresh and healthy.

Ingredients
2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan (FYI, nothing that comes in a green bottle from Kraft is fresh.)
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/3 cup pine nuts
5 cloves of garlic
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions
1. Combine the basil in with the pine nuts, pulse a few times in a food processor. Add the garlic, pulse a few times more.
2. Slowly add the olive oil in a constant stream while the food processor is on. Stop to scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add the grated cheese and pulse again until blended. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Strawberries and blueberries are always great any way they are served--even with cream. Homemade scones of course!
Your pesto pasta sounds yummy.

All food can be red when you have kids with imagination and some red food dye!

Also love red cabbage at this time of year.

And home-made blueberry muffins!

I really need to try pesto sometime. I had a bunch of fresh basil but the frost took care of that. Sigh.

Mmmm...that's just how my mom makes her pesto. I have some unexplained ability to destroy any attempt to make pesto. But here's a cool tip:

We like to make huge batches of pesto. Like, massive ammounts. Then we put it in muffin tins and freeze them. After frozen, you can pop them out of the tins and into a bag, and back in the freezer. It's a great way to make homemade pesto last until your next plant is ready!

I tried to comment earlier. :( What's triffle?

cripkitty: Triffle (sometimes spelled trifle) is a yummy british dessert usually brought out at christmas time. The one i grew up on includes layers of sponge fingers, an orange liqueur, mandarin sections and juice from said can, fresh whipped cream, custard, and probably a few other things i'm forgetting. It's yummy! I've also seen versions with jello - but that's not how my mummy made it ERGO it is wrong. LOL :p

It sounds like I need to get some fresh Parmesan cheese and grate it myself!

Everything you talk about sound yummy. Especially the pesto. My mother used to make it along time ago, but I never knew how. I'll have to save your recipe. One problem though, I don't have a food processor. Thanks for sharing.

Do you make your own homemade strawberry jam? Homemade sounds so good, and strawberry is our favorite!

salam! wow Egypt! I dream of going there for a visit! My sister did and I was just so green with envy!

At least BATW made me go there virtually!:) Your banner does look really cute. Love it!

As a Brit who has eaten quite a bit of trifle, let me explain what it means to me: it's trifle to us, and definitely does not have alcohol in! Also, it was a normal dessert growing up, not a special one. In England, people tend to make it with sponge fingers at the bottom, jelly with fruit in, custard and to top it all off: whipped cream and sprinkles.

Your variety sounds lovely!

I just bought a big trifle bowl from pampered Chef a couple of weeks ago and will be trying a strawberry trifle recipe.
Did anyone ever see the Friends recipe where Rachel made trifle with meat? LOL.

Strawberry jam is a good one! When I read red sauce, I immediately thought savory, not sweet.

I love pesto so much! My kids even like it, which surprises me. It's the best on turkey sandwiches, according to my 13-year-old.
